Shubman Gill's Stellar Century Leads Gujarat Titans to IPL Final
Gill Reflects on His Match-Winning Performance
After guiding his team to victory against Rajasthan Royals in the Qualifier two, Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill expressed that he was in a focused mindset, aiming to find gaps rather than hitting the ball too hard.
Gill's impressive century overshadowed a remarkable innings from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Although Sooryavanshi's efforts could earn him the Orange Cap, the final match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru is set, as early wickets hampered the Royals' momentum, leaving them with a modest target of 215 runs against the Titans' strong opening duo of Gill and Sai Sudharsan.
Insights on His Partnership with Sudharsan
During the post-match presentation, Gill highlighted the strong communication he shares with Sudharsan, stating, "When we bat together, we understand each other's game well. We know one of us needs to take on a bowler, and we effectively decide who will do that."
Commenting on Sudharsan's unusual hit-wicket dismissal, which occurred for the second consecutive match, Gill remarked, "I've never witnessed anything like that—two matches in a row with such a dismissal."
Team Dynamics and Upcoming Final
Gill noted the team's depth in bowling options, mentioning that Sai Kishore didn't bowl a single over during the match. He emphasized the importance of performing well in the final.
Regarding the home final, he expressed optimism, saying, "It's a quick turnaround, so we need to recover well and assess the pitch before the match."
He added that focusing on playing well without the pressure of the occasion would help them perform at their best, stating, "We discussed taking the pressure off and just playing good cricket. Even if we don't win, that's acceptable."
Gujarat Titans Secure Final Spot with Record Chase
With this victory, the Gujarat Titans have advanced to the title match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Rajasthan Royals batted first, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scoring 96 runs off 47 balls, supported by Donovan Ferreira's quick 38 runs off 11 balls, leading to a total of 214/6 in 20 overs.
In response, Shubman Gill's 104 runs off 53 balls, along with a 167-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who scored 58 runs off 32 balls, propelled the Titans to a three-wicket victory.
This chase marks the highest target ever successfully chased in IPL playoffs, surpassing the previous record of 204 runs set by Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians last year. It also stands as Gujarat Titans' highest IPL run chase, exceeding their 204-run chase against Delhi Capitals in 2025.
