Shubman Gill's Shocking Run Out Leaves India in a Tough Spot Against England

Day One Drama at The Oval

London: In a dramatic turn of events, India faced a setback as captain Shubman Gill was run out in a reckless manner during the first day of the crucial fifth Test against England at The Oval. The match was interrupted by rain, allowing only six overs to be played in the afternoon session.

At the time of the rain delay, India was at 85 for three, with Sai Sudharsan (28 not out off 84) and Karun Nair (0 off 8) at the crease.

A sudden downpour just before lunch pushed the start of the second session to 3 PM local time. Gill, who scored 21 runs off 35 balls, began the session with a classic cover drive off Jamie Overton.

However, after a promising start, Gill attempted a risky single off Gus Atkinson, who fielded the ball and swiftly hit the stumps, catching the Indian captain well out of his crease.

Shortly after this incident, rain returned, prompting the umpire to call for tea at 4:10 PM local time.

Earlier in the day, India lost both openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal (2 off 9) and K L Rahul (14 off 40), on a challenging green pitch but managed to reach lunch at 72 for two.

The pitch, the greenest of the series, offered some seam movement but lacked significant swing.

Atkinson, playing his first match of the series, made an impact in his second over by trapping Jaiswal in front. The on-field umpire initially ruled it not out, but England's successful review showed the ball would have hit the stumps.

Other bowlers, Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton, struggled with their accuracy, with Tongue conceding 12 runs in his first over, including two wides.

India scored 36 for one in the first hour of play.

Rahul, who has been a key player throughout the series, fell victim to a short ball from Chris Woakes, which he mishandled, leading to his dismissal.

Sai Sudharsan and Gill batted until lunch, which was taken early due to another rain interruption at The Oval, where the weather was unpredictable.

Sai hit two boundaries off Tongue and Woakes, while Gill showcased his skills with a punch through the covers and a short-arm pull for runs.

India made four changes to their lineup, bringing in Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Karun Nair, and Dhruv Jurel, replacing Jasprit Bumrah, Anshul Kamboj, Shardul Thakur, and the injured Rishabh Pant.

England also made four changes, having announced them the previous day, with injured captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer unavailable.
