Shubman Gill's Dismissal Sparks Debate Amid Record-Breaking Performance
Management's Support for Gill After Controversial Dismissal
Ryan ten Doeschate, the assistant coach for India, expressed that the management is likely to overlook captain Shubman Gill's reckless dismissal during the opening day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval. Gill, who had been showcasing his exceptional batting skills, made a hasty decision to run for a single on the second ball of the 28th over. Realizing too late that the run was unattainable, he was run out by Gus Atkinson after scoring 21 runs off 35 balls.
Backlash Over Gill's Run-Out
Fans and former cricketers did not hold back in criticizing Gill for his careless run-out. However, Doeschate defended the 25-year-old captain, emphasizing his impressive performance throughout the series. He remarked, "I can only imagine how frustrating it is for him. He was batting beautifully for the short time he was out there. Mistakes like this can happen, especially when the opposition is bowling well. We discussed how effectively we were accumulating runs, as it wasn't easy to score boundaries."
Gill Breaks Gavaskar's Long-Standing Record
In a remarkable achievement, Shubman Gill surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series. Gavaskar had set the record in the 1978-79 series against the West Indies, amassing 732 runs over six Tests with an average of 91.50, including four centuries and a fifty. Gill, on the other hand, has accumulated 737 runs in nine innings at an impressive average of 92.12, featuring four centuries and a top score of 269. He is now just 38 runs away from breaking the record for the most runs in a bilateral Test series, a title currently held by Gavaskar.
Gill's Dismissal and India's Position
Despite his earlier success, Gill's concentration faltered, leading to his dismissal. After his exit, Karun Nair played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings, finishing the day unbeaten on 52 runs off 98 balls, helping India reach 204 for 6 at the close of play.
