Shubman Gill Takes the Helm as India's New Test Captain
Shubman Gill's New Role as Test Captain
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 28: Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary voiced his support for Shubman Gill, who has recently been appointed as the captain of the Indian Test team. Tiwary emphasized the importance of backing Gill in this new role.
On Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Shubman Gill would lead the Test squad, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as his vice-captain for the upcoming five-match Test series.
Commenting on Gill's appointment, Tiwary stated, “He deserves encouragement and support, especially since this is a young team. I wish him the best; he is a promising young player. The selectors should commend him for leading a youthful squad, as he is a bright prospect for the future, and I believe he will excel in his captaincy.”
At just 25 years old, Gill is among the youngest players to assume this leadership position in recent times. Although he lacks extensive captaincy experience in Test cricket, he previously led India in a five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe in 2024 and has been at the helm of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gill has also held the vice-captaincy in ODIs and T20Is, serving as Rohit Sharma’s deputy during India’s successful Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025. In his Test career, Gill has participated in 32 matches, accumulating 1,893 runs, which includes five centuries.
The upcoming series against England is scheduled from June to August 2025, featuring matches at Headingley (Leeds), Edgbaston (Birmingham), Lord’s (London), Old Trafford (Manchester), and The Oval (London).
This series marks India’s first bilateral engagement following the recent retirements of both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket.
India's Test squad for the England series includes: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
