Shubman Gill Steps Up to No. 4 Batting Position

Leeds: Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian cricket team, is poised to take the prestigious No. 4 position in the batting lineup for the upcoming Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, starting this Friday. This announcement was made by Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter and Gill's deputy, during a press briefing on Wednesday, putting an end to the ongoing speculation that followed Virat Kohli's retirement from Test cricket.

Pant stated, “There are still discussions regarding who will occupy the No. 3 position. However, the roles for No. 4 and 5 are confirmed. I believe Shubman will take No. 4, while I will remain at No. 5 for now. We will continue to deliberate on the rest.”

Historically, the No. 4 position has been held by cricketing greats such as Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Gill's assumption of this role signifies a notable change in India's Test batting strategy. After facing challenges as an opener, Gill appears ready to take on the crucial responsibilities associated with this key batting position.

The No. 3 batting slot, however, is still up for grabs. Karun Nair, known for his experience and a triple-century to his credit, is among the leading candidates, while the emerging talent B Sai Sudharsan may also be in the running for his debut.

Should Sudharsan be selected, he is expected to bat at No. 3. Conversely, if India opts for a lineup featuring three all-rounders, Nair could fill the position, allowing players like Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shardul Thakur to strengthen the lower-middle order.

Under the new leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir, India's team management is anticipated to adopt a bold and adaptable strategy. More details regarding the team composition will be revealed when Gill addresses the media on the eve of the match.
