Controversy Surrounding Sponsorship at Edgbaston

During the second Test match at Edgbaston, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill found himself at the center of a sponsorship controversy. On the fourth day in Birmingham, Gill was spotted in the Indian dugout, instructing players to return as India declared their second innings at 427 runs. He was wearing a black full-sleeve vest adorned with the Nike logo while directing Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar to come back.

It's important to note that the Indian cricket team is currently sponsored by Adidas. In June 2023, under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, the team debuted new jerseys sponsored by Adidas during the WTC finals, with a deal valued at ₹75 lakh per game, totaling between ₹250 to ₹300 crore. Fans expressed their discontent on social media, criticizing Gill for wearing apparel from a competing sponsor.

BCCI's Response and Gill's Sponsorship Deal

Whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will take any action remains uncertain. However, it's worth mentioning that Gill has a lucrative endorsement deal with Nike, serving as the brand ambassador for Nike Virey.

Historic Victory and Player of the Match Award

Shubman Gill Awarded Player of the Match in Second Test

India made history at Edgbaston by achieving their first-ever Test victory at the venue, winning by a remarkable 336 runs. Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in this triumph, earning the Player of the Match title for his outstanding performances—scoring a career-best 269 in the first innings and an impressive 161 off just 162 balls in the second. His total of 430 runs not only dismantled England's bowling attack but also set new records with his exceptional strokeplay and composure under pressure.

While Gill's performance was a highlight, the victory was a collective effort. Akash Deep delivered an impressive performance with 10 wickets in the match, including six in the second innings. Siraj also shone with seven wickets, featuring a remarkable 6/70 in England's first innings. Jadeja and Pant made significant contributions, with Jadeja scoring 89 and an unbeaten 69 in both innings.

Despite commendable efforts from England's Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184 & 88), they were ultimately outmatched. This victory marks a significant milestone in India's Test cricket history abroad.
