Shubman Gill Shines Again: India Secures Victory Over England in First ODI
India Takes the Lead in ODI Series
Birmingham: Shubman Gill showcased his exceptional talent at Edgbaston, scoring a stylish 80 runs, which paved the way for India's comfortable six-wicket triumph over England in the opening ODI on Tuesday.
With this victory, India has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Axar Patel, who faced criticism for his recent performances in T20Is, delivered an outstanding all-round performance, taking 4 wickets for 62 runs and scoring an unbeaten 57 off 52 balls, making the chase of 259 runs much easier.
While chasing a target that was well within reach, the Indian captain displayed a blend of elegance and composure before succumbing to cramps. However, Washington Sundar (52 not out off 63 balls) and Axar ensured a successful chase, finishing at 45.2 overs with an unbroken partnership of 102 runs after the team was reduced to 160 for 4.
Despite battling hamstring and calf cramps that forced him to retire, Gill was in excellent form, hitting 11 fours and a six in his 75-ball innings. He received solid support from his deputy Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 35 runs during their 101-run partnership for the third wicket.
Just as Adelaide Oval has been a fruitful venue for Virat Kohli, Edgbaston has become a favorite for Gill, who previously scored 269 and 161 in a Test match victory here last year.
In this ODI, he once again demonstrated his class, even as he struggled with cramps.
After the early dismissals of Rohit Sharma (11) and Virat Kohli (5) with the score at 48, Gill took control of the innings.
He played with confidence, executing beautiful on-drives and cover drives, including a stunning six off Josh Tongue.
Once he retired hurt, the momentum shifted towards England.
Iyer's aggressive running led to his run-out, and KL Rahul fell victim to Tongue's pace, chopping the ball onto his stumps.
Nevertheless, Axar and Washington remained composed, overcoming their recent T20I struggles to build a century partnership, effectively handling a challenging spell from Jofra Archer and scoring against the spinners.
Earlier, England opted to bat first and managed to post a total of 258 runs, thanks to a resilient seventh-wicket partnership of 121 runs between Joe Root and Liam Dawson.
After a promising start at 61 without loss, England found themselves in trouble at 107 for 6 by the 22nd over. However, Root's run-a-ball 76 and Dawson's career-best 68 off 83 balls helped stabilize the innings.
Root played strategically, waiting for the right moments to attack, particularly targeting Axar and Prasidh Krishna as the pitch conditions improved.
Bumrah was the standout bowler for India, taking 1 wicket for 31 runs in 9 overs, while Gurnoor Brar (2/61 in 9 overs) and Prasidh Krishna (2/50 in 10 overs) also contributed despite conceding runs.
Axar's impressive performance helped dismantle the tail after the partnership between Dawson and Root.
