Remarkable Performance by Shubman Gill

Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill delivered an extraordinary performance in the Birmingham Test against England, scoring an impressive 269 and 161 in both innings. This achievement places him as the batter with the second-highest total runs in a single Test match.

Gill's Record-Breaking Innings

In his first innings, Gill's 269 runs came off 387 balls, featuring 30 boundaries and three sixes, effectively exhausting the English bowlers. He followed this with a rapid 161 runs from just 162 balls, including 13 fours and eight sixes, showcasing his remarkable batting skills.

Historic Milestones Achieved

With a total of 430 runs in the match, Gill now holds the second-highest aggregate in a single Test, trailing only behind Graham Gooch's record of 456 runs set in 1990. Additionally, he is the second player to score over 150 runs in both innings of a Test, a feat previously accomplished by Allan Border in 1980.

Matching Gavaskar's Legacy

Gill has joined the ranks of Sunil Gavaskar as the only Indian to score both a double century and a century in the same Test. His performance surpasses that of former captain Virat Kohli, who had a total of 293 runs in a Test against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Asian Records and Achievements

He is now the second Asian player to achieve a total of over 350 runs in a Test match outside the subcontinent, following Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad. Furthermore, Gill is among the few Asian players to have a 300-plus aggregate in Tests held in SENA countries.

Joining the Elite Club

Gill has also become the second player to score three centuries in his first two Tests as captain, a record previously held by Virat Kohli. His outstanding performance has positioned India strongly in the second Test against England, leading by 484 runs at Tea on the penultimate day.
