Shubman Gill Ruled Out of T20 Series Against South Africa Due to Injury
Injury Sidelines Shubman Gill from T20 Matches
India's vice-captain Shubman Gill will miss the last two T20 internationals against South Africa due to a toe injury. This information was confirmed by sources close to the team.
It has been reported that Gill sustained the injury during a training session, and all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure his swift recovery.
An official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, 'Shubman participated in an extended batting session in the nets a day before the fourth T20 international. He injured his toe towards the end of the session, experiencing pain and limping. Given the circumstances, it was unlikely he would play on Wednesday, so he did not join the team.'
The official added, 'At this point, it's uncertain whether he will be fit to play in Ahmedabad.' The T20 series against New Zealand is India's final series before the T20 World Cup, and the national selection committee and team management are likely to take all necessary precautions regarding their top-order specialist batsman.
Gill had previously missed the Test and ODI series against South Africa due to a neck injury sustained on the second day of the first Test in Kolkata, which required a two-day hospital stay.
He also missed the Guwahati Test and the subsequent ODI series. Before the T20 series, he was declared fit by the Center of Excellence, despite critics questioning his place in the team over Sanju Samson, who scored three centuries last season.
Gill's performance in the series has been disappointing, with scores of four and zero in the first two matches, followed by a modest 28 runs in the third match in Dharamsala, where he still appeared out of form.
Nevertheless, the coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, has expressed strong support for their star batsman, asserting that he will perform well in the T20 World Cup scheduled to begin in February next year.
