Shubman Gill's Focus on Team Victory

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, Shubman Gill, captain of the Gujarat Titans (GT), shared his insights regarding personal and team objectives. During a pre-season press conference, Gill highlighted that his main focus is on achieving success for his team rather than individual accolades. He stated, "My personal goal is straightforward - I want the team to win, whether it's for my country or the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. I don't dwell on personal achievements; my priority is the team's success."

Aiming for IPL Glory

The Gujarat Titans are gearing up for another competitive season, with Gill expressing his ambition to secure the IPL trophy. He noted that while personal goals are significant, they evolve with each tournament. "Winning is always the goal, whether in the IPL or an international series. My focus adapts with each competition. Currently, my aim is to clinch the IPL trophy, and once that is achieved, my goals will shift accordingly," he explained.

Gill Critiques the Impact Player Rule

Gill also voiced his concerns regarding the IPL's Impact Player rule, which he believes undermines the fundamental nature of cricket. He remarked that cricket should be played as an 11-player game. Introduced in 2023, this rule allows teams to substitute one player from a pool of four during a match, providing tactical flexibility. Gill stated, "I personally believe there should not be an impact player. Cricket is fundamentally an 11-player sport, and adding an extra batsman diminishes the skill involved in the game."

The Skill of Batting

He further elaborated that having a limited number of batters necessitates skillful batting to maintain the score and recover from losing wickets. "When a few batters are out, it requires skill to keep the scoreboard moving. Introducing an additional player makes the game less dynamic and reduces the emphasis on skill," Gill added.

Excitement in Challenging Conditions

"For me, chasing 180 runs on a tough wicket is far more thrilling than pursuing 220 runs on a flat pitch. This rule will remain in effect until 2027, and we discussed it during the captains' meeting yesterday," he mentioned.

Understanding the Entertainment Aspect

While Gill acknowledged the rule's intention to enhance the entertainment factor of the game, he clarified his personal disapproval. "I recognize it adds entertainment value, but ultimately, the decision lies with the BCCI. Personally, I am not in favor of it," he concluded.

IPL 2026 Launch Date

The IPL 2026 season is scheduled to commence on March 28, featuring the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Additionally, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will kick off their campaign against the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
