Shubman Gill Poised to Break Sunil Gavaskar's Long-Standing Record
Shubman Gill's Historic Chase
Manchester [UK], July 30: Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill is on the brink of surpassing a remarkable record held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar for over five decades. This record pertains to the highest runs scored by an Indian batsman in a bilateral series.
The final Test match against England is scheduled to take place at The Oval starting August 31. Currently, England leads the series 2-1, giving India an opportunity to level the five-match contest. The last time India secured a series victory in England was back in 2007.
In the previous Test at Old Trafford, Gill faced a challenging start, scoring just 12 runs in the first innings. However, he made a remarkable comeback with a century, scoring 103 runs, which transformed India's 311-run deficit into a 114-run lead, allowing them to draw the match and keep the series alive.
Gill currently stands as the leading run-scorer in the series, amassing 722 runs at an impressive average of 90.25, including four centuries in eight innings, with a top score of 269.
Gavaskar's record for the most runs by an Indian in a bilateral series is 774 runs, achieved in four Tests against the West Indies during the 1971 series, with an average of 154.80, featuring four centuries and three fifties, and a highest score of 220. Gill is now just 53 runs shy of breaking this long-standing record.
Additionally, the dynamic right-handed batsman is also closing in on another significant milestone, being only 89 runs away from eclipsing the legendary Don Bradman's record for the most runs scored in a Test series by a captain. Bradman accumulated 810 runs in five Tests during the 1936/37 home series against England, averaging 90.00, with three centuries and a fifty, including a best score of 270.
