Historic Achievement by Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill, the young Test captain of India, has etched his name in cricket history by becoming only the second Indian and the ninth player globally to score both a double century and a century in the same Test match. This remarkable feat occurred during the second Test against England at Edgbaston.

In the first innings, the 25-year-old recorded his highest Test score of 269, and he followed it up with a century in the second innings. With this performance, he surpassed the previous record of 344 runs set by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar against the West Indies in 1971, amassing a total of 369* runs in just one match. In his inaugural series as captain, Gill has now achieved three centuries in four innings.

This match places Gill among an elite group of only nine Test batsmen who have accomplished the rare feat of scoring a double hundred and a century in the same game. He is the second Indian to achieve this milestone, following Gavaskar. Additionally, he becomes the second captain to do so in England, with Graham Gooch being the first during his iconic performance against India at Lord's in 1990.

In this Test match, Gill has participated in three partnerships exceeding 100 runs, a record shared by only a few Indian batsmen in away Tests, including legends like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

On Day 4, Gill partnered with Rishabh Pant (55), contributing 110 runs off 103 balls. He later formed a 68-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, helping India surpass the 480-run mark. His century in the second innings came off 129 balls and included nine fours and three sixes.
