Match Overview

In the first ODI held on Saturday at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to field first against Afghanistan.

Due to rain delays exceeding two hours, the match has been adjusted to a 25-over format for each side. Teams are permitted to utilize a maximum of five bowlers, with each allowed to bowl up to five overs. A five-over batting Powerplay will also be implemented.

Team Preparations

India is gearing up for the upcoming ODI World Cup, albeit without several prominent players. Key figures such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj are absent due to rest or injuries.

Toss Insights

"We will bowl first. The weather is slightly overcast, which may assist the bowlers. The pitch appears to be good for batting, but there could be some assistance for pace bowlers early on. We are experimenting with different combinations to identify what works best for us. With around 15-20 ODIs leading up to the World Cup, it’s crucial to try new strategies. We have two debutants today, while Jaiswal, Prince, and Kuldeep are not playing," Gill stated during the toss.

"Had we won the toss, we would have opted to bowl first as well. However, the toss is beyond our control, and we must start strong from the outset. We have performed well recently, but this is our first encounter with India in their home conditions, making it a challenging match for both teams. We are prepared for this challenge with a balanced team of three seamers and three spinners, including two seamers and one all-rounder," remarked Afghanistan's captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.
