Shubman Gill Faces Potential Penalty for ICC Dress Code Violation
Test Series Begins with Controversy
In Delhi, the first match of the five-Test series between India and England is currently taking place in Leeds. On the opening day, the Indian team showcased impressive batting, finishing at 359/3. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101 runs, while captain Shubman Gill remained unbeaten at 127. However, Gill has found himself embroiled in a controversy.
What Rule Did Gill Violate?
While batting, Shubman Gill wore black socks, which is against the ICC's dress code regulations. According to ICC Rule 19.45, implemented in May 2023 following recommendations from the MCC, players are only permitted to wear white, cream, or light brown socks during Test matches.
Possible Consequences for Gill
If match referee Richie Richardson deems this a deliberate breach of the rules, Gill could face a fine ranging from 10% to 20% of his match fee. However, if it is determined that the violation was unintentional or due to wet socks changing color, he may avoid severe penalties.
Previous Instances of Player Penalties
- In 2018, KL Rahul was fined 10% of his match fee for wearing the wrong helmet.
- Chris Gayle faced a penalty in 2016 for using a black bat.
- Imam-ul-Haq was punished during the 2019 World Cup for displaying incorrect logos.
Thus, alongside Shubman Gill's remarkable century, this dress code issue has also become a topic of discussion. It remains to be seen what decision the match referee will make regarding this matter.
