Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian men's cricket team, has expressed his support for the ongoing student protests across the nation. The 26-year-old cricketer emphasized the importance of prioritizing the interests of students and acknowledged the courage of young individuals who are peacefully voicing their concerns. His remarks came via an Instagram story following widespread demonstrations regarding the repeated leaks of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), which serves as the entrance examination for medical colleges in India.

Gill articulated that the youth of India should have the opportunity to shape their desired future, highlighting the transformative power of education. The protests began at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, organized by the Cockroach Jantry Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. In recent days, similar protests have emerged in other cities as well. Gill stands out as the first active Indian cricketer to publicly address this issue, while former cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh have also shared their thoughts on the matter.

Although Gill is not included in India's T20I squad, he is set to return to the field on August 15, when India faces Sri Lanka in the first of two Test matches at Galle. The star batsman will lead the team as they continue their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign, aiming to revive their chances of reaching the final.
