Shreyas Iyer's Leadership Shines in PBKS's Record Chase Against SRH
Ashwin Commends Iyer's Composure
Ravichandran Ashwin, the former Indian spinner, has expressed high praise for Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS). He described Iyer as 'unflappable,' emphasizing his remarkable calmness and strategic insight during intense run chases. In a recent post on X, Ashwin highlighted Iyer's skill in assessing match situations, supporting his batting partners, and maintaining composure in critical moments, labeling his overall performance as 'Top Class.'
Ashwin remarked, 'Currently, Shreyas Iyer appears unflappable. His talent for predicting a chase, guiding his partner, and remaining composed under pressure, along with his shot selection against favored bowlers, are qualities that few cricketers possess today.'
He further noted that while modern cricket showcases many explosive players capable of thrilling performances, few match Iyer's blend of temperament, situational awareness, and controlled aggression. 'We have numerous batters who can dazzle with their shot-making, but not many like Shreyas. Top Class,' he concluded.
PBKS Achieves Historic Chase Against SRH
In a thrilling match at Mullanpur, Punjab Kings executed a record-setting chase, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets, successfully chasing down a daunting target of 220 runs with seven balls remaining.
SRH's Explosive Batting Performance
Sunrisers Hyderabad, batting first, set a formidable total of 219/6, thanks to a remarkable opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. The pair dominated the PBKS bowling attack during the powerplay, with Sharma scoring a blistering 74 runs off just 28 balls, including eight sixes and five fours, while Head contributed a quick 38 off 23 deliveries. Their partnership of 120 runs laid the foundation for a powerful batting display, with SRH racing to 105 runs without loss in the first six overs. Sharma reached his half-century in a mere 18 balls, marking one of the most explosive powerplays in IPL history.
Despite losing both openers quickly to Shashank Singh, SRH maintained their momentum, reaching 132/2 at the halfway point and 176/3 after 15 overs. However, regular wickets in the final overs, including those of Ishan Kishan (27) and Heinrich Klaasen (39), hindered SRH from surpassing the 230-run mark they had briefly threatened. For PBKS, Shashank Singh (2/20) and Arshdeep Singh (2/50) were key wicket-takers, with Xavier Bartlett also contributing with one wicket.
PBKS's Daring Chase
In response, PBKS launched a bold and aggressive chase, spearheaded by their explosive top order. Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh set an aggressive tone, attacking the SRH bowlers relentlessly. Arya scored a rapid 57 runs off 20 balls, while Prabhsimran added a quick 51 off 25 balls, propelling PBKS to 93 runs without loss in the powerplay and surpassing 100 runs in just 6.3 overs. Although SRH managed to take quick wickets through Shivang Kumar, dismissing both openers and later Cooper Connolly, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer expertly anchored the chase.
Iyer played a stellar innings, remaining unbeaten with 69 runs off 33 balls, partnering with Nehal Wadhera to stabilize the innings after early setbacks and then accelerating the scoring. His innings, featuring five fours and five sixes, ensured PBKS stayed ahead throughout the latter half of the chase. He finished the match alongside Shashank Singh, leading PBKS to a total of 223/4 in 18.5 overs.
For SRH, Shivang Kumar was notable with bowling figures of 3/33, but their bowling unit struggled to contain the aggressive PBKS top order, particularly during the powerplay and death overs, which ultimately determined the outcome of the match.
A Milestone for PBKS
With this victory, Punjab Kings achieved their 10th successful chase of targets exceeding 200 runs in IPL history, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most formidable chasing teams in the tournament.
