Shreyas Iyer Faces Fine for Over-Rate Violation
Shreyas Iyer, the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), has been fined ₹24 lakhs due to his team's slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
This incident marks the second violation for PBKS this season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate infractions. Consequently, Iyer received a more substantial fine. An official IPL announcement stated, "Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer has been penalized after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No.7 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. As this was his team's second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs."
Additionally, the other players in the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will also face fines. The statement noted, "The remaining members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lower."
Punjab Kings Triumph Despite the Fine
Notwithstanding the penalty, Punjab Kings showcased a remarkable performance, achieving a convincing victory over Chennai Super Kings. They successfully chased down a target of 210 runs in just 18.4 overs, marking their second consecutive win in the tournament.
In the match summary, a stellar half-century from captain Shreyas Iyer, along with rapid contributions from Cooper Connolly and Priyansh Arya, propelled PBKS to chase down 210 runs against CSK, winning by five wickets at Chepauk on Friday. This loss marked CSK's second defeat in the tournament, while PBKS celebrated their second straight victory.
CSK batted first, scoring 209 runs for the loss of five wickets, with notable performances from Ayush Mhatre (73 runs off 43 balls, including six fours and five sixes), Shivam Dube (45 not out off 28 balls, with five fours and a six), and Sarfaraz Khan (32 runs off 12 balls, featuring six fours and a six).
During the chase, a significant 61-run partnership between Priyansh Arya (39 runs off 11 balls, with three fours and four sixes) and Prabhsimran Singh (43 runs off 34 balls, including six fours and a six), along with a brisk 22-ball 36 from Cooper Connolly, and a fifty from skipper Iyer (50 runs off 29 balls, with four boundaries and three sixes), led PBKS to their target in 18.4 overs.
