Shreyas Iyer Appointed Captain of Mumbai Team for Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches
Shreyas Iyer Takes Over as Captain
Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been named the captain of the Mumbai team for the remaining matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He steps in for Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of this important domestic 50-over tournament due to injury. The association expressed its pleasure in announcing Iyer's appointment as the captain of the Mumbai senior men's team for the upcoming league matches.
Iyer will lead the team in the last two league matches scheduled for January 6 and 8. However, his participation in the VH T knockout stage remains uncertain, as he has also been selected for India's ODI squad against New Zealand. The BCCI indicated that Iyer's involvement in the New Zealand series will depend on his fitness. The ODI series is set to commence on January 11, while the VH T knockout matches will take place from January 12 to 18.
Should Iyer receive medical clearance from the BCCI to play in the ODIs against New Zealand, he will miss the VH T knockout stage, necessitating the appointment of a different captain for Mumbai. MCA Secretary Umesh Khanvilkar stated, "We will make a decision once the situation is clear. Shreyas will captain the team in the remaining two league matches." Iyer has been sidelined from competitive cricket since suffering an injury during the third ODI between India and Australia last October, where he sustained a serious injury while attempting to take a catch.
These matches in the VH T will mark Iyer's return to competitive play after his injury. Currently, Mumbai is positioned second in Group C and is in a strong position to advance to the next round. They will face Himachal Pradesh on January 6 and Punjab on January 8, with both matches taking place in Jaipur.
