Shooting League of India Set to Transform the Sport Experience
Akhil Sheoran's Vision for the Shooting League
The Shooting League of India (SLI) is poised to revolutionize the sport with its franchise-based, mixed-team format, according to Akhil Sheoran, an Indian rifle shooter and gold medalist from the 2022 Asian Games. Sheoran believes this league could significantly enhance the experience for both athletes and spectators, especially as Indian rifle shooting reaches unprecedented competitive heights.
Event Details and Objectives
Scheduled from February 16 to 26, 2026, the SLI aims to deliver top-notch shooting performances while allowing fans to witness elite athletes compete in a league format.
Connecting Shooters with Fans
"The Shooting League can transform how fans engage with our sport," Sheoran stated in a press release. He emphasized that the league could create a connection between top shooters and Indian sports enthusiasts, similar to other successful sports leagues. With a structured schedule and a dedicated broadcast platform, fans will have the chance to appreciate the sport and support the athletes. Sheoran recently secured a bronze medal in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions final at the 2025-26 National Championships and is set to compete in the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championships in New Delhi from February 2-14, 2026.
Excitement of the Mixed-Team Format
Sheoran is particularly enthusiastic about the mixed-team format, which he believes will introduce a new level of excitement to the traditionally individual sport. He noted, "The mixed-team format is fascinating. Each partner has specific roles, creating unique pressures and dynamics that require adaptation while maintaining core routines."
A Competitive Landscape and Personal Resilience
The league aligns with a highly competitive era in Indian shooting, as evidenced by Sheoran's recent bronze medal at the National Championships, which also featured a world-record score. He remarked, "This is undoubtedly the most competitive time for rifle shooting in India. Achievements at the Olympics, World Championships, and Asian Games have set new standards, compelling us to enhance our mental, physical, and technical skills."
Mentorship and Strategic Preparation
Sheoran views the Shooting League of India as a vital mentorship opportunity. With franchises selecting athletes from various levels, the league fosters an environment where seasoned shooters can guide emerging talent. He stated, "With our experience, we can mentor younger shooters effectively." Additionally, the league's timing is crucial for Sheoran's preparation for the 2026 Asian Games, as it will simulate high-pressure match conditions early in the year, essential for success in major competitions.
