Shoaib Akhtar Supports Bangladesh's T20 World Cup Aspirations
Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has expressed his support for Bangladesh's prospects in the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He believes that the team's developing pace attack could position them as a formidable competitor on the international stage.
In a new role as a mentor for the Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League, Akhtar aims to cultivate the next generation of fast bowlers in the country. He is optimistic that his experience will enhance Bangladesh's pace department as they gear up for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka.
"I hope Bangladesh becomes a significant force in the upcoming World Cup," Akhtar stated. "I want them to be recognized as one of the strongest teams. This national squad is incredibly exciting, and I genuinely hope they advance far and potentially win the World Cup."
Emphasis on Fast Bowling Development
Akhtar has been particularly focused on the progress of Bangladesh's emerging fast bowlers, noting their considerable improvement in recent years. He specifically praised Taskin Ahmed and expressed a desire for him to break Akhtar's long-standing speed record.
"I want Taskin to surpass my speed record," Akhtar remarked. "The pace attack is looking promising, and I sincerely hope they achieve great success in the World Cup."
Guidance for Nahid Rana
Akhtar also provided technical and mental advice to Nahid Rana, Bangladesh's fastest bowler, highlighting the significance of physical fitness and mindset.
"Fast bowling requires minimizing stress on the body," he explained. "If Rana continues with rigorous training, I would be happy to share insights with him. The right attitude towards life is crucial, and it reflects on the field."
Commendation for Coach Shaun Tait
While eager to impart his knowledge, Akhtar acknowledged the contributions of Bangladesh's bowling coach, Shaun Tait, in developing extreme pace.
"Shaun Tait is among the best fast bowling coaches available," he noted. "He is an honest and fantastic individual to have on the team."
Bangladesh's World Cup Group
Earlier this month, Bangladesh concluded their final T20I series of the year by defeating Ireland 2-1 in a three-match series at home. In the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, they have been placed in Group B with England, the West Indies, Nepal, and Italy. Their campaign will kick off against the West Indies on February 7 in Kolkata.
