MANDI/SHIMLA: The iconic Ridge ground in Shimla buzzed with excitement on Sunday night as Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla officially opened the International Boxing Championship, an event that transcended the sport itself.
This championship, organized by the Himachal Pradesh Professional Boxing Association, aims to tackle the pressing issue of drug addiction among the youth through the initiative “Say No to Drugs – Say Yes to Sports.” Additionally, it serves as a heartfelt tribute to the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh.

While the matches showcased talent from both Indian and international boxers, the evening was primarily dedicated to remembrance. During his speech, Governor Shukla referred to Virbhadra Singh as “a statesman of rare stature” and acknowledged his lasting influence on future generations.
“He was not merely a visionary but a pillar of strength. His contributions to the holistic development of Himachal are unmatched,” Shukla remarked, emphasizing Singh’s dignity, foresight, and unwavering commitment to public service that remains ingrained in the essence of the hill state.
The organizers reiterated that this event symbolizes more than just sports; it is a tribute to a leader who championed youth empowerment through education and opportunities.
Promoting Discipline Against Drug Abuse

As the crowd cheered and the sound of gloves hitting the canvas echoed, the championship's core message focused on diverting young minds from the increasing threat of drug abuse.
“Let this serve as a wake-up call,” Governor Shukla stated. “Will Himachal continue to be a Devbhoomi, or will it descend into a nasha bhoomi? The decision lies with us. Sports provide a vital escape—a sense of purpose, direction, and discipline.”
He encouraged the youth to engage in sports not just for physical fitness but also for mental resilience. “A healthy body fosters a focused mind. And a focused mind stays on track,” he added.
Shukla praised Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, the son of Virbhadra Singh, for continuing his father’s vision and supporting such initiatives. “It’s inspiring to see the younger generation promoting sports to drive societal change,” he noted.

The championship has drawn participants from various countries, including Russia, adding an international dimension to Shimla’s summer atmosphere. Earlier in the day, Governor Shukla witnessed an intense match between Indian and Russian boxers, commending their skill and sportsmanship.

The event was attended by numerous distinguished guests, including Justice Trilok Chauhan (nominated as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court), Justice Ajay Mohan Goel of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Minister Vikramaditya Singh, MLAs Nand Lal and Harish Janartha, Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan, Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena, and Governor’s Secretary Chandra Prakash Verma.
