Lajong's Impressive Win

Shillong Lajong FC achieved a remarkable 5-0 victory against Mumbay FC during a Group E match of the 135th Durand Cup, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday. This decisive win significantly enhances their chances of advancing to the quarter-finals. Everbrightson Sana was the standout performer, scoring two goals, while Abhay Gurung, Tremiki Lamurong, and Figo Syndai also contributed to the scoreline, delighting the enthusiastic home crowd.

Group E Standings

Following this match, Shillong Lajong tops Group E with six points from two games, having secured victories in both matches. Langsning FC is in second place with four points, while Nongkseh SS&CC holds third with one point. Mumbay FC remains at the bottom of the table, yet to earn a point from their two matches.

Early Chances and Mumbay's Struggles

Lajong set an aggressive tone from the start, with Phrangki Buam and Jota creating consistent threats on the wings. The first significant opportunity for the hosts came in the seventh minute when Ephraim Lalremtluanga's free kick found Arthur Pangaro, whose powerful header was cleared by Mumbay's defense.

Another chance arose in the 14th minute, but captain Kenstar Kharshong failed to connect properly with a set piece while unmarked. Mumbay struggled to establish any rhythm against Lajong's relentless pressure, managing their first shot on target only in the 23rd minute, which lacked the power to challenge goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai.

Mumbay's Goalkeeper Under Pressure

Mumbay's goalkeeper, Yasheel Manish Shah, was frequently called into action, making crucial saves against Sana's low shot in the 16th minute and denying Pangaro's close-range attempt in the 25th. Lamlallian tested him again from distance in the 36th minute, although Mumbay briefly threatened with Mohammad Kaif Khan's header from a Rohit Mirza free kick that went over.

Lajong Breaks Through Before Halftime

The situation worsened for Mumbay just before halftime when their captain, Ahmed Faiz Khan, was stretchered off after twisting his ankle in the 45th minute. Just two minutes later, Lajong capitalized on this setback. Joedson Dos Santos's free kick found Sana, whose header was saved, but Gurung was quick to finish the rebound. Shortly after, Tremiki scored, making it 2-0 with a composed finish.

Second Half Dominance

The loss of their captain and the quick conceding of two goals left Mumbay reeling as they entered the second half. Lajong continued their dominance, with Gurung missing an early chance before Tremiki assisted Sana for the third goal in the 52nd minute. Sana celebrated with a signature Cristiano Ronaldo leap, energizing the home crowd.

Mumbay attempted to respond, with Afzar Noorani narrowly missing a shot in the 56th minute. However, a mistake by Dhruvmil Pandya allowed Sana to score his second goal in the 64th minute, extending Lajong's lead to four.

Final Goal Seals the Victory

Despite Yasheel's efforts to keep Mumbay in the game with several saves, the visitors could not find relief. In the 88th minute, substitute Manbhakupar Iawphniaw's cross caused chaos in the Mumbay box, leading to Syndai scoring the fifth goal after Abhay Chhetri's header failed to clear the danger.

This victory marks a perfect start for Shillong Lajong in the tournament, placing them in a strong position at the top of Group E. Mumbay FC, still searching for their first points, must regroup quickly, especially without their captain.
