Sherfane Rutherford Aims to Make His Mark with Mumbai Indians
Rutherford Prepares for IPL Clash Against Gujarat Giants
As the Mumbai Indians gear up for their IPL match against the Gujarat Giants, batter Sherfane Rutherford shared insights about collaborating with batting coach Kieron Pollard and his aspirations to establish his own legacy within the team.
Rutherford, who was part of the 2020 championship-winning squad but did not play, is now set to face the Giants, a team he previously scored crucial runs for last season before being traded to MI.
Reflecting on Past Experiences
Recalling his time with the 2020 MI squad, Rutherford expressed that he cherished every moment. However, the current season presents a new challenge, as MI struggles after losing four out of their first five matches. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a winning mindset, stating, "No team will hand you a victory. With determination, you can overcome any obstacle. It's not about how you start; it's about how you finish. You can always recover from tough situations."
The Impact of Working with Pollard
Rutherford described his experience working with Pollard as a significant advantage. "Having known him for a long time makes it easy to connect. We spend considerable time practicing together, and he addresses many of my queries. I see this as an opportunity to carve out my own legacy in this team," he remarked.
Performance Insights
In his four innings for MI, Rutherford has accumulated 102 runs, averaging 34.00 with an impressive strike rate of 200.00. His standout performance includes a 31-ball 71* against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, featuring four and nine sixes.
He noted that Wankhede Stadium offers a favorable pitch for batting, stating, "Once you settle in, bowlers find it challenging. I aimed to secure a win for my team, but it didn't pan out. That innings boosted my confidence, and I hope to contribute to MI's victories moving forward."
Match Day Strategy
Discussing his approach to match day, Rutherford explained, "Most of my preparation occurs during net sessions. I aim to replicate my net batting style in games. Initially, I focus on singles before targeting boundaries. I stick to my training plans and trust myself. On match day, I keep things straightforward and enjoy the game, remembering it's just bat versus ball."
