Bhattacharya Takes Early Lead

Shaurya Bhattacharya kicked off the Vishwa Samudra presents Kapil Dev Invitational Tour Championship with an impressive six-under 66, securing a two-shot lead after the opening round at the Jaypee Greens Golf and Spa Resort in Greater Noida. The 23-year-old golfer, who has triumphed three times on the DP World PGTI, recorded seven birdies, with his only blemish coming on the par-four eighth hole, as noted in a press release from Vishwa Samudra.

Bhattacharya's Season So Far

Entering the tournament ranked 14th in the Race to DP World India Championship, Bhattacharya has been close to clinching another title this season, finishing joint runner-up at both the DP World Players Championship 2026 powered by Urbana in February and the Kolar Open 2026 presented by Zion Hills Golf County in August.

Sharma Trails in Second Place

Shubhankar Sharma from Chandigarh, a two-time DP World Tour champion, is in second place with a score of four-under 68. His round included an eagle on the par-five 12th hole, along with three birdies and one bogey. Sharma ended an eight-year title drought by winning the Boulders Classic on the DP World PGTI in April.

Chasing the Leader

In a tie for third place, Bangladesh's Jamal Hossain, Dhruv Sheoran from Gurugram, and Manoj S from Bengaluru all posted scores of two-under 70. Jamal achieved three birdies with one bogey, while Sheoran had six birdies and four bogeys. Manoj recorded five birdies against three bogeys.

Current leader in the Race to DP World India Championship, Saptak Talwar, struggled with a three-over 75, placing him in a tie for 36th.

Bhattacharya Reflects on His Performance

Bhattacharya quickly found his rhythm with birdies on the first two holes, showcasing precise approach shots and strategic course management throughout his round.

"Starting strong with birdies on the first two holes helped me settle in," Bhattacharya remarked. "I continued to find greens and remained patient. Although the single bogey was disappointing, I made some crucial putts."

A long birdie putt on the final hole capped off his round, extending his lead to two strokes.

"The last putt felt like a bonus," he added. "I knew it would be a long day, so staying calm and focused on each shot was essential."

Unique Tournament Format

The tournament features a unique Pro-Am format, allowing amateurs to compete alongside professionals across all four rounds. The extended schedule also means some players will compete under floodlights.

"This format is intriguing as we play alongside amateurs, and the number of groups makes for a lengthy day," Bhattacharya noted. "Adjusting to floodlight conditions is necessary, but I had a similar experience in a recent event, which helped me adapt quickly."

"The conditions were uniform for everyone. I focused on hitting greens, creating chances, and maintaining a steady rhythm throughout my round."

The Tour Championship is backed by Presenting Partner Vishwa Samudra, a rapidly expanding global business conglomerate, and Powered by Partner NALCO, a leading aluminium company in India.
