In their opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, the five-time champions MI secured a convincing six-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With contributions from Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma, MI achieved their largest run-chase in IPL history, marking their first season-opener victory since 2012 by successfully chasing down a target of 221 runs.

Thakur, named Player of the Match for his stellar bowling, noted that the sixth over of the innings was particularly challenging but pivotal for his performance. "I enjoy challenges. Bowling that sixth over was tough, but it was one of those standout performances," he stated post-match.


He also shared his emotional ties to the stadium, reminiscing about both the highs and lows he has experienced over the years. "This ground holds both bitter and sweet memories for me. Playing for Mumbai is special. I started as a net bowler in 2010, and now I’m finally playing for the Mumbai Indians, my home team," Thakur remarked.
