Shakib Al Hasan Criticizes Bangladesh Government's Decision on T20 World Cup 2026
Bangladesh's Absence in T20 World Cup 2026
The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, took place from February 7 to March 8, 2026, and the Indian team emerged victorious. Bangladesh was also set to participate, having secured their spot, but the interim government of Bangladesh declined to send the team, citing concerns over player safety in India. Star player Shakib Al Hasan has now expressed his discontent with this decision, labeling it as a significant mistake by the interim government.
A Major Misstep by the Government
During a media event in India, Shakib Al Hasan responded to questions regarding Bangladesh's absence from the T20 World Cup 2026. He stated, "I believe it was the biggest mistake of the interim government to decide against participating in the World Cup. This decision has caused substantial harm to Bangladesh cricket. Fans in our country love to see players competing in the World Cup, and opting out of such a major tournament is nothing short of a blunder." At that time, the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus had requested to shift the World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, a request that the ICC firmly rejected.
Changes in Bangladesh Cricket Board Following Government Transition
With the new government taking charge in Bangladesh, significant changes occurred within the cricket board. Aminul Islam Bulbul was removed from his position as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and an ad-hoc committee was formed to manage the board's daily operations until new elections are held. The controversy surrounding the T20 World Cup is believed to be a major factor behind Bulbul's removal. Meanwhile, the BCB is actively working to mend its relationship with the BCCI, hoping that the Indian team will tour Bangladesh for a limited-overs series.
