SG Pipers Claim Their First Victory
In a thrilling encounter at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astro Turf Hockey Stadium on Monday, SG Pipers achieved their inaugural win in the Men's Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26, defeating Hyderabad Toofans with a score of 2-1. Tomas Domene was the standout performer, scoring both goals for the Pipers, while goalkeeper Tomas Santiago delivered an impressive performance. Amandeep Lakra managed to score for the Toofans, as reported in a press release from HIL.
Pipers Take Early Control
SG Pipers started the match with great intensity, dominating the early stages. They earned multiple penalty corners, converting one through Tomas Domene's dragflick in the 8th minute, which gave them a quick lead. The Pipers secured six penalty corners within the first fifteen minutes, while the Toofans struggled to make an impact, failing to earn any penalty corners during that period.
Domene Extends the Lead
As the second quarter began, the Toofans attempted to regain control, showcasing their possession with 12 circle entries and four penalty corners, but they could not capitalize on their chances. Instead, it was the SG Pipers who struck again against the run of play, with Roman Duvekot assisting Tomas Domene for his second goal in the 29th minute, putting the Pipers ahead 2-0 at halftime.
Toofans Make a Comeback Attempt
Despite trailing, Hyderabad Toofans pressed forward in search of a goal to narrow the gap. They recorded eight circle entries and earned a couple of penalty corners in the third quarter. Tomas Santiago's goalkeeping was exceptional, but he was finally beaten when Amandeep Lakra scored with a dragflick in the 41st minute, bringing the score to 2-1 as they entered the final quarter.
Santiago's Saves Secure the Win
With a narrow lead, SG Pipers focused on their defense as the Toofans launched relentless attacks. The Toofans had 16 circle penetrations and six penalty corners in the last quarter, including a crucial penalty stroke opportunity. However, Tomas Santiago thwarted Zachary Wallace's attempt from the spot and made a remarkable double save in the closing moments, ensuring SG Pipers held on for their first tournament victory.
