SG Pipers Gear Up for HIL 2026 Season with Strong Preparations
SG Pipers' Preparations on Track
KY Willott, the vice-captain of SG Pipers, provided an update on the team's readiness for the upcoming Hockey India League (HIL) 2026 season. Captain Jarmanpreet Singh emphasized the significance of the HIL in providing young Indian hockey players with the opportunity to gain experience by competing alongside international talent. The Delhi-based team is set to begin its HIL 2026 journey on January 5 against HIL GC, while the league will officially commence with the Tamil Nadu Dragons facing off against the Hyderabad Toofans.
Focus on Key Areas
During a recent media session, Willott expressed confidence in the team's preparations, stating that they have been progressing well. He highlighted the focus on critical aspects such as penalty corner defense, attacking strategies, formations, and pressing tactics ahead of their first match. "Our preparation has been tracking nicely. Before my arrival, we had already played a practice match, and we've made significant progress since then. However, there are still key areas we need to refine. Overall, we are well-prepared for tomorrow's match," he remarked.
HIL's Role in Player Development
Jarmanpreet Singh pointed out that each team possesses a unique playing style, and the HIL provides players with exposure to various international tactics. He stressed the importance of adapting to teammates from different countries, which offers junior players valuable insights into global hockey strategies. "Every team has its distinct style of play. For instance, Australia, Holland, and Belgium each have their own approaches, and India is no exception. The most thrilling aspect of the HIL is collaborating with players from diverse nationalities, as each brings a different playing style. The ability of all players to adapt and complement one another is crucial, although the language of hockey remains universal," he explained.

HIL 2026: Tournament Format and Teams

This differs from the previous edition, which had teams divided into two groups of four. In the playoffs, the top two teams will face off in Qualifier 1, with the winner moving on to the final and the loser entering Qualifier 2. The second team in Qualifier 2 will be determined by the winner of Eliminator 1, which will involve the teams ranked 3rd and 4th in the league standings.
The eight teams participating in the Men's HIL include the defending champions Shrachi Bengal Tigers, Hyderabad Toofans, Soorma Hockey Club, SG Pipers, Tamil Nadu Dragons, Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, Ranchi Royals, and HIL GC, which has replaced UP Rudras.
