Services Sports Control Board Claims Victory at National Boxing Championships
New Delhi, June 27: The Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) showcased their prowess at the 6th Junior (U-17) Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships, emerging as the overall champions in both categories. This tournament highlighted the promising future of boxing in India, with Services reclaiming the team title in the Boys division and achieving a significant win in the Girls category, surpassing the defending champions, Haryana, who secured second place in both.
With impressive performances across various weight classes, the Services team concluded the week-long event at the National Boxing Academy in Rohtak with nine medals in each category. The Boys team earned six golds, two silvers, and a bronze, reaffirming their dominance, while the Girls team secured four golds, four silvers, and one bronze. Maharashtra finished third in the Boys championship, and Manipur took the third spot in the Girls division.
Several notable athletes from India's recent success at the Asian U-15 & U-17 Championships continued to shine. Ahaana Sharma from Delhi maintained her excellent form, winning the 50kg final decisively. Khushi Chand of Uttarakhand narrowly won the 46kg division with a 3-2 decision, while Anshika from Haryana confirmed her strength in the 80+kg category.
The SSCB's success was driven by a series of commanding final bouts in both divisions. In the Boys' competition, Udham Singh Raghav, a recent medalist at the Asian U-17 Championships, clinched gold in the 54kg category. Other top finishes included Sahil Duhan (60kg), Priyansh Sehrawat (70kg), Jaideep Singh Hanjra (80kg), and Rahul (80+kg). Lakshay Balhara's 4-1 victory over Aman Siwach was a highlight, as was Haryana's Aditya, who narrowly defeated Tikam Singh in a competitive 52kg final.
The girls' team from SSCB was strengthened by decisive wins from Naitik (52kg), Chandrika Pujari (54kg), Harsika (60kg), and Hamoor Kaur (66kg), with Kaur achieving a stoppage in the third round. Prachi Khatri's impressive RSC victory in the 80kg class, along with wins by Himanshi (70kg) and Jiya (48kg), underscored the depth of talent among India's emerging female boxers.
In the Boys' category, Manipur's Lanchenba Singh, who defeated SSCB's Piyush 3:2 in the 50kg category, was named Best Boxer, while Uttarakhand's Lucky Bagdwal (57kg) received the Most Promising award. In the Girls' division, Haryana's Divya (63kg) and Jammu & Kashmir's Bareena (70kg) were honored as Best and Most Promising, respectively. Pooja Duhan from Haryana was recognized as the Best Referee, and Rajasthan's Vishal Nirwan was awarded the Best Judge.
