Senegal Makes History with 5-0 Victory Over Iraq in FIFA World Cup
Historic Win for Senegal
Toronto, Canada - On June 27, Senegal made history by becoming the first African nation to score five goals in a single FIFA World Cup match.
In a decisive match held in Toronto, Senegal triumphed over Iraq with a score of 5-0, effectively eliminating Iraq's chances of advancing in the tournament.
Both teams entered this crucial match needing a win, ideally by a significant margin, to secure a spot in the final eight of the round of 32.
Ismaila Sarr not only scored but also assisted in this match, making him the first player from Senegal to achieve this feat in World Cup history. He also became the nation's all-time leading scorer in World Cup matches with four goals, according to statistics from OptaJoe.
Alongside Sarr, Pape Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye also contributed with goals and assists, marking a unique achievement as it was the first time three players from the same team accomplished this in a World Cup match since Germany's 7-1 win over Brazil in 2014.
Ndiaye made history as well, becoming the first player in World Cup history to come off the bench and score, assist, and make five touches in the opponent's box while also completing five dribbles.
Senegal started strong, scoring in the fourth minute when Abdoulaye Seck's header from a corner deflected off Habib Diarra, catching Iraq's goalkeeper Ahmed Basil off guard.
The situation worsened for Iraq when defender Rebin Sulaka received a straight red card for pulling down Sadio Mane just outside the box, a decision confirmed by VAR for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Although Senegal couldn't capitalize on their numerical advantage in the first half, they finally broke through in the 56th minute when Lamine Camara set up Ismaila Sarr for a straightforward finish, making it 2-0.
Just three minutes later, substitute Pape Gueye scored a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner, marking his first touch after coming on.
Gueye added another goal in the 71st minute with a powerful long-range shot, and Iliman Ndiaye capped off the scoring with the fifth goal, showcasing Senegal's dominance.
This impressive victory places Senegal in a favorable position for qualification, with their superior goal difference likely to be a crucial factor moving forward.
