Selkirk Academy Launches to Elevate Pickleball Coaching Standards in the U.S.

Introduction of Selkirk Academy

Selkirk Sport has unveiled the Selkirk Academy in the United States, a new initiative designed to enhance the quality of pickleball coaching. This program, developed in collaboration with Pickleball Coaching International, is scheduled to commence in early April. It will be implemented at two locations: Mesa, Arizona, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, catering to players who are looking for a more concentrated and performance-oriented training experience. This initiative signifies a significant trend in pickleball, where there is an increasing demand for advanced, specialized coaching.

The Academy departs from conventional clinics by offering two-day camps that focus on specific themes such as Fundamental Pickleball, Precision Pickleball, Power Pickleball, and Competition Pickleball. Each camp is tailored to enhance particular skills like control, shot placement, and match readiness. Participants will benefit from video analysis and feedback from coaches, which will extend their learning beyond the court.

Rob Barnes, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Selkirk, emphasized that the program is designed to align with the sport's rapid expansion by providing a more organized coaching framework. He noted, “Many dedicated players have surpassed the need for casual clinics, and this initiative aims to create a clearer path for their improvement.”

The training model starts with an evaluation phase, assessing players on essential skills such as dinks, drops, and resets, before categorizing them into appropriate groups. Certified coaches, along with assistants, will conduct sessions using a standardized methodology to maintain consistency in teaching.

Additionally, Selkirk Academy will launch a coaching certification program, beginning with a PCI Level 1 course, with plans for further levels later in the year. This launch has broader implications beyond the U.S., especially for emerging markets in Asia. As pickleball gains popularity in the region, the focus is shifting from community-based play to more structured development systems. For brands in Asia, the Academy underscores the importance of investing in coaching infrastructures alongside equipment. Establishing academies, certification programs, and partnerships could significantly influence the sport's future in the region. For players, this represents a shift towards specialized training, where focused skill development and performance analysis are becoming essential for advancement.

With participation in pickleball growing rapidly, Asia now faces the challenge of aligning with global standards as the sport transitions into a more technical and professional era.
