Security Alerts Prompt Evacuation During IPL Match

Dharamshala: Concerns are escalating regarding the decision to proceed with the IPL match on Thursday (May 8, 2025) between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium, despite heightened security warnings across the country.

During the match, panic ensued when the floodlights unexpectedly went out, leading to an urgent evacuation of approximately 24,000 attendees.

Kangra's Superintendent of Police, Shalini Agnihotri, and her team promptly arrived to manage the situation, ensuring the crowd remained calm amidst the chaos.

Thanks to their quick response, the potential for disorder was minimized as spectators hurried to exit following the announcement of the match's cancellation, according to eyewitness accounts.

Match Interrupted Due to 'Technical Issues'

The game had reached the 10-over mark when two floodlights suddenly failed. Confusion quickly escalated as announcements urged fans to leave the venue.

While IPL officials attributed the disruption to 'technical issues,' on-site authorities confirmed that the evacuation was a response to credible security threats amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

Reports indicated that security measures were activated during the match after intelligence suggested possible dangers.

Although no formal statements were made, the evacuation seemed to be a precautionary measure, coinciding with the heightened alert status following the Indian military's ongoing 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terror networks across the border.

Public Outrage Over Decision-Making

The sudden halt of the match has sparked widespread criticism of the IPL organizers. Many are questioning the rationale behind allowing the match to proceed given the prevailing security climate.

Legal analysts contend that both local authorities and the BCCI had sufficient justification and authority under disaster management protocols to cancel the match in Dharamshala.

"A significant risk was taken with the lives of 24,000 individuals. This reflects a failure to prioritize public safety over entertainment," remarked a former IPS officer.
