Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula 1 world champion, paid a touching homage to his childhood hero, Michael Schumacher, by driving the legendary Ferrari F2002 around the Monza circuit on Sunday, as reported by a prominent sports outlet.
This event was part of the Schumacher Legacy Celebration Run, coinciding with a special weekend that commemorates 30 years since the seven-time world champion joined Ferrari. Vettel took the iconic car onto the track, completing demonstration laps and thrilling the enthusiastic Tifosi with donuts in the championship-winning vehicle.
An Emotional Experience
For Vettel, the experience was profoundly emotional, having idolized Schumacher before eventually racing for Ferrari himself. "I have mixed feelings because, while it’s a stunning car to drive, it’s also Michael’s car, and he isn’t here today," Vettel expressed after exiting the F2002. "I felt his presence during these laps, and I hope you felt it too."
Retiring from Formula 1 at the end of 2022, Vettel reflected on his lasting passion for motorsport and the community surrounding it. "Even though I’ve stopped racing, my heart remains with this sport, the cars, the people, and the fans who make it extraordinary," he stated.
'Pee-pee in My Eyes'
The former Ferrari driver reminisced about the light-hearted moments he shared with Schumacher regarding emotions, admitting that he struggled to hold back tears this time. "We used to joke about getting emotional, and now I find myself with 'pee-pee in my eyes,'" Vettel shared. "It’s incredible. Thank you for this opportunity, and thanks to the Tifosi."
Driving a 'Special Car'
The F2002 is celebrated as one of the most successful cars in Formula 1 history, having led Schumacher to his fifth consecutive drivers' championship in 2002. Vettel quickly grasped the significance of the vehicle once he took the wheel. "It’s exhilarating. You can sense the soul of a car almost immediately, and this one screams at you to go," he remarked.
He admitted to feeling torn between pushing the historic Ferrari and savoring the moment. "While doing donuts, I could see the excitement in the crowd, and I was caught between wanting to push the car and wanting to enjoy this moment," he noted.
Celebrating Schumacher's Legacy
Vettel emphasized the vibrant atmosphere at Monza and the lasting bond between Schumacher, Ferrari, and the Italian fans. "It’s incredible to feel how alive Michael’s spirit is here, and how vibrant Ferrari’s spirit remains," he added.
Ferrari dedicated the Italian GP weekend to honoring Schumacher's legacy, featuring a special livery adorned with seven stars symbolizing his seven world championships. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also donned Schumacher-inspired race suits. Schumacher claimed victory at the Italian Grand Prix five times with Ferrari, in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003, and 2006. The 2026 Monza weekend will also mark 20 years since his last win with the Scuderia.
"Today is Michael’s moment, and we send all our love and emotions to him," Vettel concluded. Having raced for Ferrari from 2015 to 2020, winning 14 Grands Prix and finishing as runner-up in the world championship in 2017 and 2018, Vettel acknowledged the significance of his return to Ferrari at Monza, but emphasized that the day ultimately belonged to Schumacher and his lasting legacy.
