Educational Institutions Declare Holiday for World Cup Final

In a move to celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, Kerala, Manipur, and Meghalaya have announced a holiday for all educational institutions on Monday. This decision allows students to enjoy the match between the reigning champions Argentina and Spain without the stress of attending classes the following day.

The final is set to begin at 12:30 AM IST on Monday and is likely to extend into the early morning hours.

The Kerala government responded to student requests by declaring a holiday for schools, colleges, and professional institutions. General Education Minister N Samsudheen shared this news via social media, emphasizing the importance of accommodating football enthusiasts.

Higher Education Minister Roji M John mentioned that the Chief Minister directed the holiday for colleges and professional institutions to help students avoid travel issues after the late-night event.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan acknowledged students' concerns about attending classes after potentially staying up until 2:30 AM, especially if the match goes into extra time or penalties. He praised Kerala's unparalleled passion for football and encouraged fans to relish the final.

Previously, CPI(M) leader and former Education Minister V Sivankutty, along with various UDF leaders, had called for a holiday for educational institutions.

In Manipur, the Education Department confirmed that all schools under different education boards, as well as government, aided, and unaided colleges, would remain closed on Monday to allow students to watch the World Cup final.

Meghalaya's Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma also announced a holiday for all educational institutions, highlighting the state's strong enthusiasm for football. He stated that this decision would enable young people to fully enjoy the eagerly anticipated final.

This announcement comes as excitement builds in Meghalaya, where numerous fans have gathered at government-organized fan parks in Shillong, Jowai, and Tura to watch the World Cup matches.

Argentina, the defending champions, will compete against Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
