Ambikapur (Chhattisgarh) - On Sunday, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai officially launched the Sarguja Olympics 2026, a three-day sporting event that has garnered significant acclaim from both participants and officials. The initiative is celebrated for its role in fostering opportunities for grassroots athletes and enhancing sports development in the area.
This year's event features an impressive turnout of over 3.49 lakh athletes competing in 12 different sports, including kabaddi, football, kho-kho, basketball, wrestling, badminton, and javelin throw.
According to Ram Kumar Singh, Assistant Director of the Youth & Sports Welfare Department, the Sarguja Olympics showcases competitions in 12 sports, with a notable increase in female participation compared to male athletes. He emphasized that comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure the well-being of the athletes, including accommodation, meals, medical check-ups, and dedicated medical teams.
“We are hosting competitions across 12 disciplines, with women participating in greater numbers than men. All necessary arrangements, such as lodging, food, and health check-ups, have been established for the athletes, along with medical teams for support,” Singh stated.
Umendra Kumar, a kabaddi coach, expressed that the event is instrumental in realizing the dreams of young athletes. He encouraged Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to consider organizing similar events in every division to provide local athletes with more opportunities.
“This event is fulfilling the dreams of our youth. Hosting the Sarguja Olympics is a golden opportunity for all of us. I urge Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to organize such Olympics in every division, so local players can benefit,” Kumar remarked.
Participant Arun Kumar shared his excitement about competing in the Sarguja Olympics, highlighting the valuable opportunities it presents for many athletes in the region. “We are thrilled to participate in this sports event. Previously, it was held in the Bastar division, but now it is taking place in Sarguja. Many participants are grateful for this chance,” he noted.
