Sarah Taylor Makes History as England Men's Test Fielding Coach
Historic Appointment for England's Men's Team
Sarah Taylor, the former England wicketkeeper, has been named the fielding coach for the men's Test team ahead of the upcoming home series against New Zealand. This marks a groundbreaking moment for the national team setup.
Taylor, who is celebrated as one of the top wicketkeepers in cricket history, will temporarily fill in for the regular fielding coach, Carl Hopkinson, who is currently engaged with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
Endorsement from England's Management
Rob Key, the managing director of England men's cricket, confirmed Taylor's appointment after the squad announcement for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's next month. Taylor has been actively involved with the England Lions during the winter, collaborating with Andrew Flintoff and performance director Ed Barney, and has received high praise for her coaching skills.
"I believe she is among the best in her field," Key remarked about Taylor's new role. "Her work has been exceptional, and both Flintoff and Barney have spoken very highly of her contributions," he added.
A Trailblazing Career
This appointment is significant as it represents the first time a female coach will work with England's senior men's international team, further highlighting Taylor's trailblazing career.
At 36, Taylor has played 226 international matches over a 13-year career, significantly contributing to England's victory in the 2017 Women's World Cup. Known for her exceptional glovework and cricketing acumen, she has established a solid coaching background since retiring, with roles in county and franchise cricket, including positions with Sussex County Cricket Club and Manchester Originals.
Addressing Fielding Challenges
Taylor's arrival is timely, as England's Test team has faced criticism for fielding errors that contributed to their recent Ashes defeat in Australia, where they dropped 11 catches during a 4-1 series loss.
Following the Ashes, Hopkinson was reinstated as the fielding coach, alongside the return of bowling coach Troy Cooley. Key noted that Taylor's involvement was made possible due to scheduling conflicts with Hopkinson's franchise commitments, stating, "Carl has obligations with the Mumbai Indians, but we will utilize him at a later date, just not for this series."
