Sanju Samson Discusses His Move from Rajasthan Royals

Indian cricketer Sanju Samson has opened up about his significant transition from the Rajasthan Royals to the Chennai Super Kings prior to the last IPL season. He acknowledged that departing from Rajasthan was a considerable risk for his career.

During an appearance on Jio Star's 'Superstars' show, he shared how the guidance from former captain MS Dhoni provided him with a much-needed boost in confidence during a challenging period at CSK.

Sanju's Decision to Join CSK

Samson's transfer to Chennai was one of the most notable trades in IPL history, valued at ₹18 crore. In exchange, Chennai sent Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals.

"Once you inform the Rajasthan management of your departure, there's no going back. You might find yourself uncertain about which team will select you in the auction. Nevertheless, I had resolved that 2025 would be my final season there," Sanju elaborated.

He mentioned that this decision followed extensive discussions with his family.

"At 30, I felt prepared to embrace a new challenge and start anew. Many advised me that my batting style might not suit the slow pitches at Chepauk. However, I was determined to carve my own path," he added.

Support from MS Dhoni During Tough Times

Samson joined CSK in excellent form, having recently been awarded 'Player of the Tournament' at the T20 World Cup. However, his initial matches did not go as planned, as he scored single-digit runs in the first three IPL games, all of which Chennai lost. It was during this difficult time that MS Dhoni offered his support.

"After our first three defeats, Mahi bhai (Dhoni) approached me during practice and asked if I was alright," Sanju recalled. "I began to respond, 'Bhaiya, I'm okay, but...' He quickly interrupted me, saying, 'Don't let your mind drift into the 'but'. Concentrate on what you do best, and everything will align.'"

Sanju regarded those words as a valuable lesson. Instead of altering his style or succumbing to pressure, he entered the next match against Delhi Capitals and delivered an outstanding unbeaten 115.

After overcoming his initial struggles, Sanju had a remarkable season with Chennai, amassing 477 runs in 14 innings at an average of 43.36 and an impressive strike rate of 165.63, which included two centuries and one half-century.
