Sanjog Gupta Takes the Helm at ICC
On July 7, 2025, Sanjog Gupta will officially step into the role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Cricket Council (ICC), as announced by the organization. Gupta, a prominent figure in the media, entertainment, and sports sectors, is recognized for his extensive experience, spanning over 20 years. He currently holds the position of CEO at Sports & Live Experiences at JioStar and is celebrated for his contributions to the evolution of the sports landscape in India.
Jay Shah Expresses Confidence in Gupta
ICC Chairman Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm regarding Gupta's appointment, stating, "We are thrilled to welcome Sanjog as our new CEO. His vast experience in sports strategy and commercialization will be crucial for the ICC's future endeavors." Shah emphasized Gupta's comprehensive understanding of the global sports environment and his passion for technology, which will aid in expanding cricket's reach and establishing it as a regular Olympic sport.
The recruitment process, initiated in March, attracted over 2,500 applications from candidates across 25 nations, showcasing the role's global significance. A thorough review led to a shortlist of 12 candidates, ultimately resulting in Gupta's unanimous recommendation by the Nominations Committee, which was later approved by the ICC Board.
Gupta's Vision for Cricket's Future
In response to his new role, Gupta remarked, "I am honored to take on this challenge at a time when cricket is on the brink of remarkable growth, supported by nearly 2 billion fans worldwide. The sport is entering an exciting phase with increasing commercial opportunities and the rising popularity of women's cricket. The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and advancements in technology will significantly boost the sport's global presence."
Gupta has been instrumental in transforming sports broadcasting in India and has played a key role in the success of major cricket events, including the ICC tournaments and IPL. His career began in journalism, and he joined Star India (now JioStar) in 2010, where he held various leadership positions before becoming the Head of Sports at Disney & Star India in 2020. His innovative approach has consistently driven growth in the media and sports sectors.
