Sanjog Gupta Takes the Helm as ICC CEO

On Monday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Geoff Allardice. Gupta is set to officially begin his role on July 7, marking him as the seventh individual to hold this position within the ICC.


ICC Chairman's Praise for Gupta

In announcing Gupta's appointment, ICC Chairman Jay Shah commended him for his extensive knowledge of global sports and the media and entertainment sector. With the Los Angeles Olympics approaching, this decision is seen as a significant move for the ICC. Shah stated:


"I am pleased to announce that Sanjog Gupta has been appointed as the CEO of the ICC. Sanjog brings extensive experience in sports strategy and commercialization, which will be invaluable for the ICC."


He further elaborated:


"His deep understanding of the global sports as well as M&E landscape combined with his continued curiosity about the cricket fan's perspective and passion for technology will prove essential in our ambition to grow the game in the coming years. Our goal is to move beyond traditional boundaries and establish cricket as a regular sport in the Olympics, growing its expanse across the world and deepening its roots in its core markets."


Selection Process for the New CEO

Shah also mentioned that Gupta was selected through a unanimous vote by the Nominations Committee. He remarked:


"We considered several exceptional candidates for this position, but the Nominations Committee unanimously recommended Sanjog. The ICC Board Directors look forward to working closely with him, and I would like to welcome him on behalf of everyone at the ICC."


Background of Sanjog Gupta

Sanjog Gupta is a prominent figure in India's sports broadcasting landscape. A graduate of Delhi University in Economics, he began his career as a reporter in 2010 with Star Sports. He has been recognized in Fortune's "40 Under 40" and honored as a "Leader Under 40" by sports industry leaders.


Previously, Gupta managed sports content and broadcasts for Star & Disney India and currently oversees operations at JioStar Sports following the merger. He played a key role in broadcasting the Indian Premier League and major ICC tournaments.


With nearly 20 years of experience in media and entertainment, Gupta has been instrumental in pioneering regional sports broadcasts in seven languages, introducing AR/VR innovations, and leading grassroots initiatives like KBD Juniors and Khelo India. His leadership has also significantly impacted Indian leagues such as the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League.

In his initial remarks after assuming the role, Gupta emphasized the global expansion of cricket and the promising opportunities that lie ahead. He stated:


"It is a privilege to have this opportunity, especially at a time when cricket is poised for unprecedented growth and enjoys the passionate support of almost 2 billion fans worldwide. These are exciting times for the sport as marquee events grow in stature, commercial avenues widen and opportunities such as the women’s game scale in popularity. Cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the rapid acceleration of technology deployment/adoption could act as force-multipliers for the Cricket movement around the world."


He further articulated his aspirations for cricket's future, emphasizing innovation, outreach, and collaboration.


"I look forward to contributing to the next phase of cricket’s evolution, expanding its global footprint, enhancing the fan experience, and working closely with ICC Member Boards to build on our strong foundations."
