Sakshi Rana Enhances Skills at National Hockey Camp Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers
Sakshi Rana's Development at National Camp
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], February 23: Midfielder Sakshi Rana of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team is taking full advantage of the ongoing national training camp in Bengaluru. Under the mentorship of Chief Coach Sjoerd Marijne and Scientific Advisor Wayne Lombard, she is focused on refining her skills and tactical knowledge.
The 18-year-old athlete, who made a notable senior debut last year by scoring against Spain, views the camp as an essential opportunity for daily learning, physical conditioning, and enhancing her game intelligence.
“We are addressing our weaknesses every day,” Sakshi remarked about the camp's constructive environment. “Wayne, sir, emphasizes the importance of strength and fitness, as well as recovery. The coaching staff explains everything clearly, and senior players motivate us juniors to perform at our best,” she added.
Initially trained at the Pritam Siwach Academy in Sonipat under coach Kuldeep, Sakshi's naturally aggressive midfield style is now being balanced with tactical insights from the senior coaching team.
“In our one-on-one sessions, the coach encouraged me to maintain my current approach while stressing the need to enhance my pre-scanning and communication on the field, especially since I play centrally,” she explained. “During team discussions, we focus on maintaining structure—holding the ball and knowing when to pass, as international play brings quick pressure,” she noted.
Her recent experience in the Hero Hockey India League has significantly boosted her preparation. Competing against elite international players has given her valuable exposure and insights into high-level match readiness.
“Participating in the Hero HIL has greatly improved my confidence in communication,” she stated. “Observing players like Yibbi Jansen has taught me a lot about game strategy.”
While her primary goal is to absorb as much knowledge as possible during the camp, the team is also gearing up for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, set to take place from March 8 to 14. Inspired by senior teammates like Neha Goyal, Sakshi is committed to working diligently in preparation for any opportunities that may arise.
“Every day, I remind myself to give my best,” Sakshi shared regarding her mindset. “If I participate in the qualifiers, my aim is to win. For now, we need to focus on hard work and execute the coach's strategies effectively,” she concluded.
The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad will kick off on March 8 against Uruguay, followed by a match against Scotland on March 9, and will wrap up with a final game against Wales on March 11.
