Nishio, Sep 22: Sakshi Chaudhary, a gold medalist from the Commonwealth Games, triumphed over Aira Villegas, a bronze medalist from the Paris Olympics, in the preliminary round of the 2026 Asian Games, securing her place in the pre-quarters.
Chaudhary showcased an impressive performance at the Nishio Gymnasium, winning by a unanimous decision of 5-0 against her Filipino opponent.
She dominated all three rounds, with scores of 10-9, proving to be the more skilled boxer, as her accurate punches overwhelmed Villegas.
Having advanced to the pre-quarters, Chaudhary is set to face Alua Balkibekova, the reigning world champion in the 51kg category, in a challenging match on Thursday.
Chaudhary has established herself as a formidable competitor, having previously defeated notable boxers such as two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen and current world champion Minakshi Hooda during the selection trials for the Commonwealth Games 2026. She moved down from 54kg to secure her spot by defeating Zareen in the semifinals and Hooda in the finals.
At the Commonwealth Games 2026, she clinched the gold medal by beating England's Ruby White with a score of 5-0. Following her success at the CWG, she is now focused on the Asian Games.
"Winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games was a dream come true for me. Now, my full attention is on the Asian Games. These are the events I have always aspired to excel in, and I aim to perform at my best," Chaudhary expressed.
She emphasized that representing India is her primary motivation, driving her to improve with each match.
"I fight for my country. This thought inspires me and gives me the strength to surpass my previous performances," she stated.
Chaudhary mentioned that she would start her preparations for the Asian Games immediately, applying the lessons learned from her Commonwealth Games experience to enhance her skills.
"I will commence my training for the Asian Games now. I've gained valuable insights from my Commonwealth matches, and I will always treasure this experience," she remarked before the Asiad.
