Kochi (Kerala) [India], April 22: In a remarkable display of skill, Sachin Yadav clinched victory at the National Federation Senior Athletics Competition 2025, achieving a javelin throw of 83.86 meters, securing his top position in the event on Monday, according to reports from Olympics.com.
Competing at the Maharaja's College Stadium, Sachin's winning throw was recorded in the fifth round, with his final attempt of 83.67 meters also sufficient to lead the competition.
Earlier this year, Sachin set his personal best at 84.39 meters during the National Games.
Yash Vir Singh earned the silver medal with a throw of 80.85 meters, while Sahil Silwal took home the bronze with a distance of 77.84 meters. Notably, Asian Games silver medalist Kishore Jena finished fourth with a throw of 77.82 meters.
This competition marked Jena's second event since the Paris 2024 Olympics and his recovery from injury. Earlier this month, he secured second place at the Indian Open Athletics Meet in Chennai with a throw of 75.99 meters, trailing behind Yash Vir Singh's 77.49 meters.
Kishore Jena's personal best stands at 87.54 meters, achieved during the Asian Games 2023, where he won a silver medal behind national record-holder and world champion Neeraj Chopra.
The 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition also serves as a qualifying event for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025, scheduled to take place in Gumi, South Korea, next month.
A total of seven javelin throwers, including fifth-placed Shivam Lohakare (76.75m), sixth-placed Shashank Patil (76.66m), and seventh-placed Rohit Yadav (76.37m), surpassed the Athletics Federation of India's qualifying mark for the Asian Championships in Kochi.
The entry standard for the men's javelin event is established at 75.36 meters.
Numerous athletes showcased impressive performances on the opening day in Kochi.
In the men's 10,000 meters, both Sawan Barwal (28:57.13) and Abhishek Pal (29:14.86) met the qualifying mark of 29:33.26, with Barwal setting a new meet record.
In the women's 1500 meters, Lili Das (4:10.88) and Pooja (4:12.56) also surpassed the Asian qualifying mark of 4:15.00, while Yoonus Shah clocked 3:41.93 in the men's 1500 meters, beating the qualifying time of 3:42.30.
However, the final selection for the Indian team for the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 will be at the discretion of the AFI.
In the men's 100 meters, Manikanta Hoblidhar set a new meet record and met the Asian Championships entry standard with a time of 10.25 seconds in the semi-finals, although he ultimately finished with a bronze in the final.
Pranav Pramod Gurav took first place, while national record holder Gurindervir Singh finished last in the eight-man final.
Vithya Ramraj and Subha Venkatesan were among six runners who met the continental qualifying mark in the women's 400 meters heats, with the final for this event scheduled for a later date.
