Missed Opportunity for United

Ryan Giggs, the legendary winger for Manchester United, disclosed that the club had a chance to recruit Kylian Mbappe during his teenage years at Monaco but chose not to pursue him. This revelation came during a podcast where Giggs, who holds the record for most appearances at United, shared insights about the club's awareness of Mbappe back in 2015 when he was serving as an assistant to manager Louis van Gaal.

A Chance Encounter in France

On the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Giggs recounted an intriguing encounter in southern France. While coaching for United in 2015, he was approached by a local named Lionel, who urged him to observe the young talent, Mbappe. Giggs described the moment, saying, 'I was walking back to the hotel along the beach when I sensed someone following me. This guy, Lionel, introduced himself as a big United fan and insisted I check out Mbappe, who was at Monaco.'

Scouting Efforts by United

Following this tip, Giggs relayed the information to Albert Stuivenberg, then an assistant coach at United. They attended several youth matches featuring Monaco, where they were impressed by Mbappe's exceptional skills. Giggs noted, 'We watched him play and thought, 'Wow, this kid is something special.' However, despite their enthusiasm, the scouting team later watched Mbappe in a match against Paris Saint-Germain and decided against pursuing him, citing uncertainty about his potential.

Mbappe's Stellar Career

Kylian Mbappe eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain on loan in 2017, making the move permanent the following year. He has since become one of the top forwards globally, achieving remarkable success with PSG, Real Madrid, and the French national team.

A Legacy of Records and Trophies

Mbappe has made history by winning the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice, in 2022 and 2026, becoming the first player to achieve this feat. His accolades include the Golden Boy award in 2017 and the Kopa Trophy in 2018. He played a crucial role in France's 2018 World Cup victory and contributed to their UEFA Nations League win in 2021. At the 2026 World Cup, he became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history with 22 goals.
