Introduction of Women's Franchises

On Monday, Rugby India took a significant step forward by announcing the inclusion of women's franchises in the Rugby Premier League (RPL) for its second season.

Expanding the League's Reach

Following the success of the inaugural 2025 season, four of the six men's teams—Chennai Bulls, Delhi Redz, Mumbai Dreamers, and Kolkata Banga Tigers (previously known as Kalinga Black Tigers and now based in Kolkata)—will also introduce women's teams. This initiative represents a major advancement towards inclusivity and the development of rugby in India.

Empowering Female Athletes

The introduction of women's teams highlights the league's dedication to creating a sustainable rugby environment while offering a premier stage for female athletes to demonstrate their skills at the highest level, as stated in a press release from Rugby India.

Details of the HSBC Rugby Premier League

The HSBC Rugby Premier League is set to take place from June 16-28 at Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. This season builds on the strong foundation laid by the inaugural season held in Mumbai last year, which featured six men's franchises. The league has quickly become a vital force in promoting rugby throughout the nation. The addition of women's teams is anticipated to enhance the league's visibility and motivate future players.

Leadership's Vision for Inclusion

Rahul Bose, President of Rugby India, expressed, "Our aspiration at Rugby India has always been to establish a women's edition of the RPL. This year, that aspiration becomes a reality. We owe our gratitude to our partners, GMR Sports, and our fantastic franchises. Women's 7s rugby globally is as thrilling as Men's 7s rugby, and our Indian women are exceptional! Join us in Hyderabad to witness the excitement!"

Sujoy Ganguly, CMO of GMR Sports, remarked, "At GMR Sports, we have consistently aimed to create platforms that foster meaningful change in Indian sports. The inclusion of women's teams in the Rugby Premier League is a natural and crucial evolution for the league. It showcases our commitment to nurturing talent across genders while enhancing the overall quality and appeal of rugby in the country."

Upcoming Player Draft and Auction

The player draft and auction for the four women's teams, along with the six men's teams, including Hyderabad Heroes and Bengaluru Bravehearts, is scheduled to occur in Hyderabad on April 30.
