The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) kicked off their 2026 IPL season by achieving a remarkable feat, completing the fastest chase of over 200 runs in IPL history against Sunrisers Hyderabad, finishing the target in just 15.4 overs.

"Our squad consists of players at various career stages, all eager to learn. My responsibility is to identify each player's needs while preparing them for match situations. The challenges they face differ significantly. For instance, Phil Salt often contends with the new ball swinging, while Romario Shepherd rarely encounters swing at that point. My focus is on helping them grasp these scenarios, understanding the positions they need to adopt, and providing feedback accordingly. Coaching is as much about understanding the individual as it is about honing their skills," Karthik shared, reflecting on his coaching philosophy in a franchise press release. He emphasized the importance of clarity, brevity, and trust, enabling players to make informed decisions under pressure.

Phil Salt Praises Karthik's Influence

"DK is a genius. He excels at gathering detailed information alongside Freddy (Wilde) and the coaching team, simplifying it for practical application on the field. This is arguably his greatest strength. His recent experience at the highest level adds immense value to our coaching setup, and we are fortunate to have him," Phil Salt remarked about the batting coach, according to the release.

Utilizing Broadcasting Insights

"These players are elite and already excelling in world cricket, so overcoaching isn't necessary. It's about providing the right insights and trusting them to make optimal decisions. My broadcasting experience has been invaluable. Observing various teams and players closely allows for a deeper analysis of their strengths and weaknesses. As a commentator, I constantly break down the game, which aids in coaching. This experience has also taught me the importance of clear and concise communication, which is crucial when working with players," Karthik added, as per the release.

Customized Player Preparation

RCB's batting displays this season have showcased a well-structured and adaptable approach. A significant part of Karthik's role has been to customize preparation for individual players, particularly in helping them anticipate and react to specific match situations. "Tim David is focusing on particular scenarios that bowlers may target him with. We begin by understanding his strengths; being a tall player with a unique range, we strategize on how to position him for executing certain shots consistently. We aim to replicate match situations in training, pinpointing the shots he is most comfortable with and areas for improvement. Then, we design drills around that," Karthik explained, as quoted in the release.
