Rohit Sharma's Test Retirement: A Tribute to His Legacy

Rohit Sharma Bids Farewell to Test Cricket
Gurugram (Haryana) [India], May 10: The cricketing community is reacting to Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, which he announced on May 7. Former Indian women's cricketer Anjum Chopra honored the captain's legacy during the launch of Turbo Track.
Chopra expressed, "To me, Rohit Sharma has always been the captain of India," while attending the Turbo Track inauguration.
She further stated, "Regardless of his absence from Test matches, he will forever be recognized as India's captain and a source of national pride."
Rohit made this announcement just over a month before India embarks on a five-Test series against England, commencing on June 20 at Headingley.
Reflecting on his departure from the longest format, Chopra remarked, "His absence in Test cricket will be felt, but it's reassuring that he will continue to play One Day Internationals."
Sharma's Test career spanned 67 matches over 11 years, concluding with a remarkable record.
He debuted against the West Indies in November 2013 and accumulated 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score of 212 was achieved during a memorable home series against South Africa in 2019, making him India's 16th-highest run-scorer in Test history.
Rohit's Test journey began with a stunning 177 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 2013. Despite showing great potential, he initially faced challenges in establishing himself as a leading batsman, particularly in overseas conditions. Between 2013 and 2018, he played only 27 Tests, scoring 1,585 runs at an average of 39.63, with three centuries and ten fifties. His best score during this period was 151, and he struggled in challenging conditions in South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia.
However, Rohit rejuvenated his Test career as an opener with two centuries against South Africa in Visakhapatnam in 2019. In 40 Tests during the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), he scored 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties, marking him as India's leading run-scorer and century-maker in WTC history, ranking 10th overall among top run-getters. He also captained India to the WTC final against Australia in the UK in 2023, where they faced defeat.
