Rohit Sharma Reflects on Suryakumar Yadav's Game-Changing Catch in T20 World Cup Final

A Memorable Moment in Cricket History

In a recent interview, Rohit Sharma reminisced about the intense emotions felt by the Indian cricket team during the T20 World Cup final against South Africa last year, particularly when Suryakumar Yadav's pivotal catch of David Miller was under review by the third umpire.

On June 29, 2024, India celebrated a significant victory, ending a 17-year wait for a T20 World Cup title, leaving South Africa heartbroken. The Indian bowlers, especially Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya, played a crucial role in defending a modest total of 177 runs during the final overs.

As the match reached its climax, South Africa needed 16 runs in the final over with Miller at the crease. Pandya bowled a wide full toss that Miller hit high into the air. Suryakumar dashed from long-off, leaping to catch the ball just as he was about to cross the boundary.

Rohit shared his anxiety during the review process, stating, “When the catch was being checked, I was at long-on, and I thought it might have gone for six. I was already calculating the runs needed, but then I saw Surya catching it.”

He emphasized the difficulty of the catch, noting, “It looked like it would easily cross the rope, but the wind played a part in pulling it back.”

During the review, Rohit confided in Suryakumar, expressing his reluctance to watch the big screen for the decision. “I told him, ‘You tell me if it was a catch; I don’t want to look.’ He assured me he had caught it, but then I noticed him hesitating, saying, ‘Maybe, I don’t know,’” Rohit recalled.

Once the third umpire confirmed the catch, the momentum shifted dramatically in favor of India. They ultimately secured a thrilling seven-run victory, leading to joyous celebrations on the field.
