Rohit Sharma Celebrates India's Historic T20 World Cup Victory
Rohit Sharma's Praise for the Team
Rohit Sharma, the former captain of India, expressed his congratulations to the national cricket team following their remarkable win in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. He took to Instagram to commend the team's collective effort and highlighted the significant contributions made by each player throughout the tournament. "Fantastic effort from the whole team, congratulations!" Rohit shared on his Instagram.
Sanju Samson's Impressive Performance
Sanju Samson had an outstanding tournament, accumulating 321 runs across five innings with an impressive average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37. His performance included 27 fours and 24 sixes, making him the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Notably, he surpassed Virat Kohli's previous record of 319 runs from the 2014 T20 World Cup, marking the highest runs by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition. However, Pakistan's Sahibzada Farhan claimed the top spot with 383 runs, averaging 76.60 and boasting a strike rate of 160.25, including two centuries and two fifties.
Achievements in Knockout Stages
Samson's exceptional form continued as he surpassed Virat Kohli to become the Indian player with the most runs in a single T20 World Cup. He also joined the ranks of Virat and Shahid Afridi as one of the few players to score fifties in both the semifinal and final of the T20 World Cup. His performance eclipsed Marlon Samuels' 85* in the 2016 final and Kane Williamson's 85 in the 2021 final, establishing him as the Indian with the highest score in a T20 World Cup knockout match. Additionally, he became the third player alongside Virat and Afridi to achieve fifties in both semifinal and final matches.
Joining the Ranks of Consistent Scorers
Sanju has now joined the elite company of players like Mahela Jayawardene, Babar Azam, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Kusal Mendis, and Sahibzada, as he recorded three consecutive scores of over 50 in T20 World Cups, a record shared by only a few.
Final Match Recap: India vs New Zealand
In the final match, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, a spectacular return to form from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 52 runs off just 21 balls, along with his 98-run partnership with Samson, made New Zealand regret their decision. Samson then partnered with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 54 runs off 25 balls, to propel India past the 200-run mark by the 16th over. After a slight slowdown, Shivam Dube added valuable runs, finishing with 26* off 8 balls, leading India to a total of 255/5, the highest score in T20 World Cup finals. James Neesham was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs.
During New Zealand's chase of 256 runs, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah were instrumental in dismantling their batting lineup, with figures of 3/23 and 4/15 respectively. Despite a half-century from Tim Seifert, who scored 52 runs off 26 balls, New Zealand struggled to build partnerships and were ultimately bowled out for just 159 runs.
