Rohit Rajpal, who serves as the president of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) and is the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup team, has declared his intention to run for the presidency of the All India Tennis Association (AITA). His campaign is focused on promoting good governance, enhancing institutional transparency, and creating a player-centric approach aimed at advancing Indian tennis on the global stage.

Focus on Olympic Aspirations

With India's goal of hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics in mind, Rajpal stressed the necessity of developing elite pathways in both major cities and smaller towns to ensure that Indian athletes can achieve podium finishes in future Olympic events.

A Player-Centric Vision

"Tennis has been my passion since childhood; it is not merely a sport for me. At 55, my dedication to Indian tennis remains unwavering. After thoughtful reflection and discussions with supporters in the tennis community, I have chosen to take this step. Our priority should be to empower athletes, maintain transparent governance, and establish sustainable environments for future champions to thrive," Rajpal stated.

A Distinguished Background in Sports

Rajpal, a former Asian Junior Champion and medalist at the Asian Games in Beijing, faced a significant back injury that ended his professional playing career. He transitioned into sports administration, dedicating nearly ten years to pivotal roles within both the DLTA and AITA. As the non-playing captain of the Davis Cup, he has led the national team to several important victories, including advancing to the second-round qualifiers for their upcoming match against South Korea this September, aiming for a spot among the final eight nations.

Plans for Future Development

In addition to his tennis commitments, Rajpal has an extensive administrative background, having served as an Executive Board Member of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and as Chef de Mission for the Indian team at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. He has also played a role in governance improvements for Indian volleyball, which led to a bronze medal at the Asian Volleyball Championships.

Rajpal expressed his appreciation to the Government of India, the IOA, and the AITA for their ongoing support in his various roles. He plans to release a detailed vision document outlining strategic initiatives for grassroots development, tournament organization, and athlete welfare in the near future.
