Rohan Bopanna Reflects on Grand Slam Triumph and Enduring Legacy
Celebrating Grand Slam Success and Determination
Rohan Bopanna, a former Indian tennis star and multiple Wimbledon semifinalist, recently shared his thoughts on achieving his first men's doubles Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open. He expressed satisfaction with his perseverance, stating, "I’m glad I remained committed to the grind and made the right choices," despite the lengthy wait for a major victory.
The upcoming Wimbledon tournament is set to commence on June 29 and will run until July 12 at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London. Bopanna has reached the semifinals multiple times at this prestigious event. After winning the French Open mixed doubles in 2017, he had to wait seven years for his next title, which he secured alongside Matthew Ebden at the 2024 Australian Open.
Wisdom from a Tennis Legend
In a recent interview with JioStar, Bopanna reflected on his Australian Open victory, noting, "When success came quickly, I thought everything would change the following year. I had no idea it would take another 13 years for my first Grand Slam win. However, I’m grateful I persevered and remained dedicated. Staying relevant in this sport requires hard work, especially with many competitors aiming for your position. My experiences have certainly contributed to my resilience."
Bopanna also spoke about the invaluable advice he received from his idol, two-time Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg. He emphasized the importance of focusing on personal strengths rather than comparing oneself to peers. "I remember meeting Stefan Edberg, who is still my role model. He advised me to concentrate on my own game and not to mimic others. This guidance has been pivotal throughout my career," he concluded.
A Remarkable Career and Legacy
Having announced his retirement from professional tennis in November of last year, Bopanna, now 46, holds the record as the oldest male player to win a Grand Slam title and the oldest World No. 1 in doubles. These achievements highlight his enduring passion for the sport. Additionally, he represented India at the Olympic Games, finishing fourth at the Rio 2016 Olympics with partner Sania Mirza, and has been a vital member of the Davis Cup team for over two decades.
